Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 12–40 m tall.

Stems: Bark gray, subfibrous throughout, finely fissured.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate, 9–16 cm long, 1.6–2.5 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 15–20 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles flattened, 13–27 mm long, pedicels 0–4 mm long. buds clavate, 15–19 mm long, 7–13 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum hemispherical, much wider than hypanthium. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit campanulate or cylindrical; often faintly ribbed; 13–22 mm long; 13–17 mm wide; valves 4; level or barely exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted on O'ahu; where it is spreading or at least regenerating from seed.
